Americana, a journey into jazz in memory of Martin Luther King
La Spezia International Jazz Festival turns 50
The 23rd of July begins the La Spezia Jazz Festival, which has been taking place in La Spezia for over 50 years and brings together every year the most important performers of international jazz.
It is certainly no coincidence that Spezia is the venue of the Festival, the jazz music scene has always been very lively in the city, thanks to the work of the Sprugolean Jazz band of Tiberio Nicola, founder of the event. The musical ensamble was born in the 60s in a particularly stimulating and active musical environment, and traveled the world to play and come into contact with some of the most important personalities of international jazz.
Hence the idea of bringing to the summer of La Spezia the music of these great performers called in turn to play right in the Gulf of Poets, initially in Lerici and then at the Teatro Civico, in the heart of the city. It was so that great names of jazz, over time, have passed from here. These include Bill Evans, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, George Coleman, and then Keith Jarrett, Gary Burton, Michel Petrucciani, Franco D’Andrea, Enrico Rava, Massimo Urbani and many others.
To the proud initiator of the Festival, always tirelessly active to organize a great event until his death in 2002, is dedicated the prize contended by six musicians during the Festival.
Dedicated to America and Martin Luther King, the La Spezia Jazz Festival arrives in the big apple
Americana is the theme chosen by the artistic director Antonio Ciacca, composer and conductor of international fame, for the 50th edition of the International Jazz Festival of La Spezia, scheduled from 23 to 29 July 2018 in Piazza Mentana. And for the occasion, the music festival of La Spezia will be twinned with New York with a cultural exchange of artists who will perform in Italy and in the Big Apple from 10 to 16 October 2018 during the Italian Jazz Days.
In La Spezia as well as in New York, the musicians will dedicate their music to Martin Luther King, whose death anniversary is this year. Of jazz, the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize activist said it was “triumphant music, celebrating life”.
