Charm and mystery in Lunigiana

Lunigiana, Trekking Leave a comment

Between reality and legend, the “middle ground” of Lunigiana tells stories of fascinating mystery in its streets, enchanted woods and ancient villages. On the eve of Halloween, a scary journey to discover the donaneghe, witches and the werewolf of Burcione.

Like many boundary lands, where you left the known to face the unknown, the Lunigiana region tells stories of mystery. In these limited places, crossed by ancient transit routes for long uninhabited stretches, stories were handed down that transformed the visible reality into as much imaginative as convincing reconstructions.

In one of these stretches takes place our next itinerary, Saturday 27th October, conceived together with the Guides of Pennato and Spezzino Vero, to celebrate Halloween  discovering the scary stories of the area
Leaving Aulla and the public road, you will enter one of these tracks that lead from the  lively town to an enchanted  forest, through an environment completely surrounded by vegetation, a “green tunnel” that seems just a passage to the truest soul of these places, made of uncontaminated and unpredictable nature, which seems to observe us among the fronds with emerald green eyes. The stones around change color and shape gradually and a great silence, sometimes broken by the shrill song of the jays and the green woodpecker’s laughter, turns us into an atmosphere that is at the same time peaceful and full of restlessness for what will come.

From a small clearing opens the view of Bibola, high on a hill, and on the Donaneghe stones that have always loomed over the village threatening its quiet life, and pushing the look further, all the Lunigiana, the Apuan Alps and the Apennine chain in their majesty.

donaneghe, antichi massi probabilmente posti ad uso religioso in epoca preistorica

With a little shiver, and the feeling of abandoning the known reality, we face the ascent towards the caves of huge, huge boulders, giant ophioliteth stones that, in their form and location, reveal an unnatural and refined disposition. Probably places of worship in prehistoric times, in the story of the older people of Bibola and Vecchietto, these stoned were the caved houses of witches with long dirty nails that kidnapped children, and robbed the farmers and craftsmen of their products at night. However, they were also sometimes good, in fact from their teaching is the recipe for focaccette: a frugal but tasty dish that is often found in local tables.
Witches fought a woeful war with the shamans, who saw these last winners: only the beautiful Lunaria survived, a witch whose great verse eyes perhaps still observe us in the woods.

In Burcione, the impossible love story between a werewolf and a white deer

Along the way you will also find the ruins of the castle of Burcione, surrounded by an obscure legend: it is told that a powerful lord lived here that turned into a werewolf at night, while his spouse turned into a white deer and, to survive, had to hide every night!
