Is La Spezia worth visiting? Hell Yeah!
La Spezia, ugly city where the tourist should not stop. Things are not like that anymore. Here are the top four reasons why La Spezia became a city worth visiting.
Everyone knows the Cinque Terre , everyone knows the upper Tuscany coast, many know the Lunigiana, not many think of La Spezia as a possible tourist destination.
If the recent past, this made sense, today it is a shame not givng the slightest attention to the city, the gray and drab industrial center of the second half of the twentieth century is now painfully, but surely, elbowing to earn a place in the sun and a new future.
“Today it is a shame not deigning the slightest attention to the city, when you are in the area.”
Main town of the area, La Spezia today is worth a visit for more than one reason: the pedestrian center and its strategic location, the increasing supply of tourist accommodations and of its growingly exciting nightlife. If La Spezia will never be the sole destination of a one-week vacation, it certainly can be one strategic foothold or pleasant stop for a nice time.
Here are some good reasons to consider:
1 The accommodation on offer is booming: less expensive and more served than the surrounding area
No one can promise you the atmosphere of the Cinque Terre other than in the Cinque Terre, this is beyond doubt. It is precisely for that atmosphere that accommodation in the beloved five coast villages can nbe for some- especially in high season – discouraging.
The stay in the city is certainly cheaper , even considering the explosion of guesthouses and B&B that there has been recently.
Also, the City is definitely the better served place in terms of transport (train, motorway). It should be aknowledged, moreover, that if the intention is to visit the Cinque Terre, hte best to do it is by train and La Spezia is the most served station to do so.
La Spezia is connected with the Cinque Terre even with alternative transports: you can reach it by private bus or by sea, with the ferry.
2 In the heart of one unique region: not only Cinque Terre
Visiting La Spezia offers the opportunity to visit a beautiful area, enclosed between the Cinque Terre on one hand, and the Apuan Alps on the other.
The city will be much easier to reach The Riviera , which is also made of wonderful places like Tramonti, Bonassola, Framura and Lunigiana.
Without forgetting the exceptional destinations within the very same Gulf of Poets : Porto Venere, Lerici, Tellaro.
Then there are the excellent hinterland villages, as Pignone, Castelnuovo, Varese Ligure, Brugnato, scattered among the green Val di Vara and Val di Magra, which is home to the beautiful and historic Sarzana.
3 An urban trekking day searching for small surprises
One of the good reasons to visit La Spezia, if you intend to do urban tourism, it is just that you need one weekend to visit it at ease.
City built on a humane scale, La Spezia has a big pedestrian center where you can walk in peace.
In the streets of La Spezia, you will not find the tower of Pisa or the Milan Cathedral, but several curiosities that can take you to a quaint urban trekking: from old town Hall hidden on the waterfront to the beautiful gardens, the animals hidden in buildings facades to the extraordinary futurists mosaics of the postal building.
And then the museums, that have in Lia Museum and Museo Navale their points of excellence.
4. It might seem incredible, but the nightlife of the area is here
There was a time when La Spezia’s nightlife was lame, but it’s over. It is not that it has suddenly become Rio de Janeiro , but we must say that in the pedestrian center in recent years were born clubs which animate the La Spezia evenings.
Especially if the fun you want is a meeting place to spend the evening in company with a chat and a drink in La Spezia you will find what suits you.
True, there is lack of variety, but – together with the many nice restaurants, bars and pizzerias – it is the point of greatest life of the area currently.
