Ameglia

The territory of Ameglia is one of the most interesting and suggestive in La Spezia and Cinque Terre area, rich in history and tradition, as well as natural beauty. Its location, between the sea and the land, between Liguria and Tuscany, near the mouth of the river Magra, made of Ameglia since ancient times a benchmark for economic and social life of local populations.

Ameglia dal basso verso i colli è inconfondibile
Ameglia

The village of Ameglia brings life testimonies since the fourth century BC, with an important necropolis probably built by the Apuan Ligurians who lived these areas. The Romans settled here and particularly loved the climate and the beauty of the area, as evidenced by the sumptuous Roman villa located on the sea of Bocca di Magra.

In the Middle Ages Ameglia grows its strategic importance, with the construction of an important castle, which became the seat of the Bishop of Luni, and the Monastery of Santa Croce del Corvo, in which it seems also to have hosted Dante Alighieri. Like all medieval towns of the area, Ameglia has long been fought over by Tuscany and Genoa, until the latter placed it under the captaincy of Lerici. In these decades Ameglia acquired the present structure of medieval village.
The shape of Ameglia is well recognized in view of the hills that look down the passage of the river Magra. The area is perfect for beautiful hikes in the Montemarcello Park, of which it is part, to the sea or to the green inland forests.
At the foot of Ameglia lies the small town of Bocca di Magra, right at the mouth of the river, with many docks for private mooring and vibrant cultural life, especially in the summer season. The beaches of Punta Corvo and Punta Bianca are two beautiful beaches for swimming, while the Fiumaretta beach is the most served and equipped.
