Vernazza is perhaps the oldest village in the Cinque Terre area, hosting some of the most ancient buildings and churches in the area. The wealthy Genoese families of the past owned properties in Vernazza, which became an important trading center during the Middle Ages.
The first documents on Vernazza, the first castrum of the Cinque Terre, date back to an act of 1080 that mentions the Castrum Vernatio as a marine base of the Obertenghi family, lords of Vernazza in the 11th and 12th centuries, who probably used the natural harbor as a point of departure for their ships and to defend the area from attacks by Saracen pirates.
The main street of the village is a picturesque street, which before reaching the square of the marina leads to a beach totally created by the flood of 2011. The street has a lively atmosphere, and has many typical artisan shops and restaurants.
