The Byron Grotto in Portovenere

Portovenere is one of the most symbolic places of the Gulf of the Poets, for the beauty of its landscapes and the Byron Grotto is probably the most famous one.

These magic landscapes were of great inspiration for many poets, especially the English Romantics. Among them, Lord Byron lived between the Gulf of Poets and loved especially Portovenere, which he apparently elected as spectacular starting point for its swimming companies in the Gulf.

To him was for this reason dedicated the incredibly beautiful grotto, today the Byron Grotto, that opens below the castle of Portovenere, embraced by the cliff on which stands the church of San Pietro. The Byron cave is characterized by a white cliff that dives into the sea. Through a narrow opening in the square in front of Saint Peter church, you can access the cave to admire its beauty. The view of the Grotto is also very impressive from the ancient portico of the church.

The Byron grotto is also a very suggestive point from a naturalistic point of view. Here nature in prehistoric times has created an extraordinary fusion of rocks of magmatic origin of great beauty. An incredible fusion of smooth and sharp stones, which create natural secoirs, blocks from which to dive into a spectacular panorama. For this reason, the Byron cave is one of the landmarks for spectacular international diving championships.
